Running Shoes
The last time I did a run when I was concerned about my shoes, ooops, I didn't wear them enough to get my feet totally used to the shoes. That was a couple of years ago, on my first and so far only marathon in Arizona. Many people suggest, or recommend using a pair of shoes for about 200 miles. My experience confirms this suggestion. One of the best ways to tell if you are wearing out your shoes (things like size and weight, type of surface etc., will make a difference) is to look at the bottoms. Mine wear out on the outside of the heels first, one side more than the other. Once I have used a pair for this 200 or so miles I feel my foot leaning out, when compared to a different pair, say a dress shoe or whatever which I wear less often. So, that being the case, your weight distribution will be different on the worn out shoes and could case some discomfort.
A fellow runner from where I work suggests using two pair. He his information is founded in the idea that the cushioning will compress and takes a couple of days to return to normal. I agree, also considering that a different pair may wear differently, and alternating will help the runner determine the best shoe.
My recommendation is that you get the best shoe that you can easily afford, don't spend a lot on any shoes till you know for sure which brand and style is best for you. If you are running over fifteen miles per week, which you probably should be training for a 1/2 marathon, you'll need to change shoes a couple of times before January, for example-you do the math. And, perhaps a little disappointing for the shoe makers, I tend to favor a cross-training shoe rather than a running shoe. They are slightly heavier, but I'm running for health and personal accomplishment, and the running shoes are too lightweight (tend to be less cushioned on the bottom). Best of luck, and keep running. If you feel too sore or have more than minor aches and pain you could be overtraining. I once had to take four weeks off because my knee was sore and slightly swollen but started up gradually and got back to where I was before, without any further problems...Take care!
